Hoffmann Lime Kiln
Llanymynech Limeworks Heritage Area.
Heritage Open Day 2023.

I was invited to exhibit works in this site that would inspire curiosity about the Lime industry which took place here (1899 - 1914) and the material that was used and produced.

Limestone was quarried on nearby hillsides, trucked into the kiln building via the ‘wicket arches’, stacked, and burnt using coal fire. The coals had been brought to site by specially constructed railways. The highly corrosive and disfiguring burnt lime was then raked out, and transported away from site by the canal and rail networks. Lime was used to fertilise the clay farmland in the Welsh borders and used for lime plaster (with laths) and mortar in house construction.

The Heritage Site is open access 24/7 so the work had to be put up and removed within the day.
